SPRING 2008
ICT Executive Committee Approves 17 New Projects; RFPs Will be Posted in Early MayThe ICT Executive Committee held its spring meeting on April 8 and decided to fund 17 new research ideas. The newly approved research totals $3.8 million and brings the total approved ICT projects to 82. Of the existing projects, 13 have been completed and 52 others are in progress. For more information on the newly funded projects and ICT's RFP process, please click on the link above. UIUC Transportation Group Hosts Dallas Little for Paul Fraser Kent Lecture SeriesThe transportation group welcomed Dallas N. Little as its distinguished speaker for the Paul Fraser Kent Lecture on Thursday, April 10. Professor Little, the E.B. Snead Chair Professor from the Zachry Department of Civil Engineering at Texas A&M University, spoke about recent studies, including breakthrough work at UIUC, that have demonstrated the impact of even short recovery periods between load applications in the fatigue damage process of asphalt materials. ICT Kicks Off Its Technology Transfer Initiatives with Ultra-Thin Whitetopping Short CoursesUltra-thin whitetopping (UTW) is a pavement rehabilitation strategy where a thin layer of concrete is placed on top of an existing hot-mix asphalt pavement. This summer, the ICT will disseminate the findings from its research on Ultra-Thin Whitetopping (UTW) through short courses. Participants will learn the structural design and construction guidelines for UTW and how to write a material and construction specification to achieve the design life intended. This UTW course will be the first in a series of ICT technology transfer initiatives. For more information on ICT's UTW research and the upcoming short courses, click on the link above. ICT Publication Spotlight: Nighttime Construction and the Evaluation of Lighting GlareNighttime highway construction is often advocated to minimize inconvenience for the traveling public and to reduce the potential for work zone accidents. However, poor utilization and placement of the lighting equipment to illuminate the work zone can cause glare that is dangerous to drivers and workers. The ICT recently published research that provides recommendations for lighting arrangements for nighttime work zones and identifies a practical method that can be used to measure and quantify glare during nighttime highway construction. Korean Institute of Construction Technology Hosts ICT DirectorsThe Korean Institute of Construction Technology (KICT) invited ICT Director Imad Al-Qadi and ICT Associate Director Sam Carpenter as the distinguished speakers for its annual lecture series during the week of March 24. For more information about their visit, click on the link above. UIUC Student and Faculty AwardsThe UIUC transportation students and faculty have received several prestigious awards and honors in 2008. Click on the link above for a list of recent awards and candidates for PhD degrees in May 2008. IDOT Helps Develop "Pavement Interactive"The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) participated in a pooled fund study to develop a one-stop web resource for "all things pavement." Pavement Interactive, located at www.pavementinteractive.org, is an interactive reference tool that provides information on pavement materials, design, construction, maintenance, and more. The Pavement Interactive website functions both as a learning tool and a ready reference; users can learn about pavements as well as look up typical values, methods, practices and resources. IDOT encourages anyone who works with pavements to become familiar with this useful resource. ICT Participates in T.H.E. ConferenceThe 94th annual Transportation and Highway Engineering (THE) conference convened at the Illini Union on the UIUC campus on February 26-27, 2008. This year's conference attracted a record attendance of approximately 950 attendees. ICT Investigator William Buttlar served as Chairperson of the conference. ICT Director Imad Al-Qadi gave the second day's opening presentation and introduced the attendees to the ICT and its research. Additionally, another ICT Investigator, William (Bill) Vavrik, was on the conference program to discuss the ICT project "Rolling Lane Closures" (R27-32). NEXTRANS to Host Inaugural Summit on May 5On May 5, 2008, Nextrans, the USDOT Region V Regional University Transportation Center, located at Purdue University, will host its inaugural Summit. The day-long Summit will bring together a broad range of high-level stakeholders in the federal, state and local governments, industry, university and the non-profit sectors in a series of events to share the NEXTRANS Center's mission, vision and goals. Register Now for the Sixth RILEM International Conference on Cracking in Pavements to Convene on June 16-18, 2008, in Chicago, IllinoisThe ICT is a sponsor of the Sixth RILEM conference in Chicago on June 16-18, 2008, which is the first time this conference will be held in the United States. This conference focuses on the causes, development, and maintenance/rehabilitation of pavement cracking, as well as techniques for abating pavement cracking. It will include contributions on theoretical modeling, experimental research, and case history studies on cracks in flexible, rigid, and composite pavements. For more information and to register, click on the link above. 2008 T&DI Pavement Conference Set for October 15-18 in Bellevue, WashingtonThe ICT plans a strong presence at the ASCE's 2008 Airfield & Highway Pavements Conference on October 15-18, 2008, in Bellevue, Washington. The conference will explore "Efficient Pavements Supporting Transportation's Future." For more information, including how to register and ICT's roles at the conference, please click the link above. The 4th International Gulf Conference on Roads to Convene in Doha - Qatar November 10-13, 2008The 4th International Gulf Conference on Roads follows the success of the previous three conferences held in Kuwait (2002), Abu Dhabi (2004) and Muscat (2006). This conference will serve a venue for practitioners and academics to share their knowledge, experience and insights on the design, analysis, planning, operation, and management of transportation systems.
